Why Choose Rivus?

At Rivus you receive an individualized treatment approach based upon your needs and conditions. We attentively listen to your concerns and assess how medication management and psychotherapy, along with other modalities, can aid you in achieving your goals. We are an integrated team of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychologists, and therapists. Each provider brings their own unique perspectives and specialities to your treatment plan. We provide medical supervision throughout your treatment, including both in office and between sessions.

Medication Management

A psychiatric practitioner will perform an initial evaluation similar to what a primary care provider might do. This includes an overview of your symptoms and a determination of whether or not medication is a good option in the treatment of your mental health. Where our primary care colleagues address more physical aspects of treatment, we utilize discussion to get to the root of your mental health care needs.Based on this assessment, a diagnosis is made and a treatment plan is designed with the patient at the clinic. If it is in the patient’s best interests, medications will be discussed and education will be provided on the actions, uses, and side effects of the suggested medication options. When the patient agrees on a medication and treatment option, the medication is prescribed for a trial period to observe the effectiveness.

This is the “medication management,” aspect of psychiatric care. We monitor the effectiveness of medication over a course of time to determine if the treatment meets the patient’s goals. Due to how psychiatric medications react differently within a patient’s brain chemistry, the effectiveness of the medications may vary from person to person. Every individual is unique. Medications are often utilized at the same time as other forms of treatment such as counseling, life management skills, and/or behavioral therapies. Through careful monitoring and on-going discussion we find the right medication and treatment plan to improve the patient’s mental health.

The use of prescription medications introduces potential risks and side effects, as with any medication. These are all discussed in detail, and weighed against the benefits of the medications, with each patient. Not all patients and not all psychiatric problems need medicines, but there are certainly instances where prescription medicines are the best treatment available to relieve a patient’s suffering. Medicines are commonly an important and effective part of the treatment of many mental illnesses to include depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, panic, sleep problems, attention deficit disorder and several other disorders.

Psychotherapy/Counseling

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing. It can help people learn better self-awareness and healthier coping skills to improve their lives and overall functioning. Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life; the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss, like the death of a loved one; and specific mental disorders, like depression or anxiety. There are several different types of psychotherapy and some types may work better with certain problems or issues.

Marital and Family

Family and/or couples counseling allows family members, couples, and others who care about each other to express and explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely, to understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on strengths and make useful changes in their relationships and their lives.

Our Approach

Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP) offers a distinct approach compared to traditional talk therapy. In PAP, the focus is on creating an environment that allows individuals to connect with their innate wisdom, guiding their journey toward healing and growth. This method honors the natural healing potential of the psyche, emphasizing an inward-directed approach to recovery. Unlike the traditional medical model, where a client seeks an 'expert' to provide a prescription or remedy for their issues, PAP encourages individuals to harness their own healing capabilities with the therapist's support. Just as the body possesses its own natural ability to heal, so does the psyche; they are interconnected and not separate.

For instance, when someone visits a doctor for a broken arm, the doctor sets the bone, cleans the wound, and clears any obstacles that might impede the healing process. The body then takes over and naturally heals the wound, fuses the bone, and closes the injury. The doctor doesn't directly heal the arm but instead creates the optimal conditions for the body to heal itself. This principle applies similarly to the process of Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP). In PAP, we employ certain medicines to facilitate a significant shift in consciousness, which can help dismantle mental barriers and allow the person to connect with their own healing potential. Within this expanded state, individuals can access a deeper part of themselves that offers direction, insight, and clarity, thereby promoting profound healing and growth.

At present, we are engaged in research examining the effects that different medicines have on this process. Beyond the scope of these studies, ketamine is currently the only medicine legally approved for use in the context of Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy.
